ABOUT THIS PROJECT

SEARCH+RESQ was commissioned by an Aerospace company from San Francisco called Planet Labs to collaborate on producing custom laser etched artwork for their spacecraft satellites. Planet Labs designs, builds and launches satellites faster than any company or government in history. These spacecraft satellites called ‘Doves’, which make up the world’s largest constellation of the Earth-imaging satellites and are launched as ‘Flocks’ into orbit every three to four months. These satellites do what is called “Line Scanning” the planet to image the entire Earth daily. 

The company’s Art Director provided the custom graphic illustrations of migratory animals along with hundreds of memorable “quotes that inspire” shared by the employees of the company and we created a series of prototype samples to determine the perfect laser intensity required to etch the side panels of each of the (backpack-sized) satellites without interfering with the performance of the of these delicate satellites when in orbit.

Over the course of several years, SEARCH+RESQ was responsible for laser etching over 250+ spacecraft satellites’ creating the largest art show in earth’s orbit and we are proud to have been involved in this revolutionary movement by having their very own artwork in space.
